Self-Sensing Eco-Earth Composite with Carbon Microfibers for Sustainable Smart Buildings

This paper proposes a new sustainable earth–cement building composite with multifunctional sensing features and investigates its properties through an experimental campaign. Earth cement are proportioned as 2/7 in volume, while carbon microfibers added various amounts to achieve piezoresistivity, ranging from 0 1% respect the weight of binder (i.e., earth + cement). The proposed material couples construction performance self-sensing order monitor structural during servile life building. use partial replacement reduces environmental footprint keeping sufficient mechanical properties, at least for applications that do not require large load-bearing capacity (e.g., plasters or low-rise constructions). analyzes electrical behavior cubic beam samples electromechanical tests. results show filler percentage near percolation zone, ranged between 0.025 0.25%, exhibit best performance. From cyclical compressive tests linear developed models, it could be deduced content 0.05% fibers, weight, represents best-performing smart further investigation higher scales. As demonstrated, selected mix generated clear strain-sensing signals, reaching gauge factors over 100.
